How to Make Sushi
Sushi makes me happy.

The Day I Became a Sushi Chef

Those of you who have known me, or perhaps you have wandered over from The JetSet Family, know all to well that my mom is a dream weaver. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you want, but somehow if you tell her your wishes, she somehow makes them happen.

And that’s exactly what happened the afternoon I spent learning how to prepare sushi with Executive Chef Shin at Sushi Roku in Newport Beach, CA. This class is not offered to the public, but I’ve always been taught, if you can dream it, you can be it, and mom made my wish come true.

When it comes to eating sushi, I become Ms. Fancy Pants, and even sometimes a wee bit bossy. I take my sushi very seriously, and I know the rules to eating it. Because many don’t know, but there are rules! In fact, I feel a Coco’s Rules for Properly Eating Sushi post brewing.

The Life of Coco: Sushi Chef for the Day

Now let’s get some sushi.

If you haven’t waited until the credits rolled, I would like to give a very special thank you to Mona and our friends, especially Executive Chef Shin, at Sushi Roku in Fashion Island for making the time to make this dream come true. You are all very special to us, and we will never forget your kindness.

P.S. from Coco’s Mom: For an assignment at school, Coco had to become an expert on a subject she was interested in. When I asked her what she was interested in, there was zero hesitation. She looked me dead in the eyes and said, “Mama, I want to learn how to make sushi and I want to film it.” Sure. Why not? I thought the idea sounded rad and I wouldn’t mind learning myself. “No, mama, I want to learn from Chef Shin at Sushi Roku in Newport Beach…” What can I say, the kid has big dreams.

Next time you are in Newport Beach, be sure to swing by Sushi Roku at Fashion Island and see Executive Chef Shin and his team in action.
